TNA Sacrifice 2009
So after I finished watching the Lockdown PPV from 2009, I realized there was a ton of TNA content that I have yet to even see, so decided to buy a subscription to Impact Plus (their WWE Network) so I could go back and watch some of their own content, plus seeing as I'm trying to get invested in the current product figure I'd show some support. I did have some buyers remorse when Joey Ryan got signed but I have it now, I may as well put it to some use. Rather than pick a random event from some other time, I decided to pick on the follow up PPV to Lockdown, which is where we are now.
We get footage from earlier today to start the show, where we see the arrivals of the challengers for the TNA World Title, Angle, Jarrett, Sting, and champion Foley, all making the ultimate sacrifice for their shot at the title, which I'll get into more detail later when we get there. Then we get to our opening video package, which has the four in the main event listing their accomplishments, their time in the business, talking about the sacrifices they've made to get to where they are.
We're live from the Impact Zone in Orlando, Florida. Tenay hypes up the main event a little more before we get to our opening match.
Motor City Machine Guns (IWGP Jr. Tag Team Champions) & Sheik Abdul Bashir vs "Showtime" Eric Young & Lethal Consequences ("Black Machismo" Jay Lethal & Consequences Creed)
Pre-Match Notes & Thoughts: I'm a bit confused to why Sheik is teamed with the Machine Guns and commentary aren't doing a great job explaining it.They call this a special attraction featuring the stars of the X Division so. They also bring up how it was thought up until recently that Daniels was Suicide but was proven to be wrong.
Sabin and Lethal start the match with some fast-paced back and forth action, Lethal getting the better with an arm drag and a dropkick, cover and a kick out. EY tags in, Sabin reverses a whip off the ropes, knee to the ribs, roll up and a near fall. Spin kick to the ribs and Shelly tags in, only to walk into a flapjack and a series of elbows, then an ax handle off the middle rope, cover and a two count. Creed tags in, snapmare and chinlock on Shelly, fights back up, Creed sent off the ropes and caught with a sleeper, but gets free with a jawbreaker. More back and forth until Creed delivers a dropkick to the knees, then leaps off Shelly's back to drive an elbow down, cover and a kick out.
Creed goes for a suplex but Shelly blocks and sweeps the legs out, followed by an enziguri. Bashir in now with rights, Creed sent off the ropes, slips between the legs and delivers some rights. Bashir whipped into the corner into a clothesline off the rebound, cover and a two count. Bashir with a jawbreaker then Sabin tags back in, Creed face first in the corner, whipped across the ring, but hits the corner face first. Lethal back in with an ax handle to the arm, followed by rights, Sabin off the ropes into an elbow to the head, cover and a kick out. Creed in again, off the ropes into a backbreaker by Lethal, followed by a Russian leg sweep by Creed. Lethal puts on the chinlock as Creed comes off the ropes with a dropkick to the face of Sabin, cover and a kick out.
Creed sent off the ropes and Bashir knees him in the back from the apron, only to be knocked off. Sabin trades rights now until Creed comes off the ropes to be tripped up by Bashir, then Sabin with a dropkick to the face. Bashir pulls Creed out and Shelly comes off the apron with a knee to the face, sending Creed into the guard rail. Creed rolled back in, Sabin covers for a two count. Bashir gets the tag and takes Creed down with a snapmare, then a dropkick to the back of the head, cover and a kick out. Bashir holds down Creed with a leg lock while he tags Sabin back in, who takes Creed down to a knee with a wristlock until Creed fights his way back up, tries to make the tag but Shelly knocks his partners off the apron. Creed manages to roll free of the Guns to try and get the tag but they're back on the attack, Sabin holds him up as Shelly comes off the ropes but Creed gets the boot up, taking Sabin down with an arm drag. Bashir from behind with a waist lock, he gets driven back into the corner, then the Guns chop him as Creed ducks, then throw him back but he ducks again. Bashir gets hold of him again but gets nailed with an enziguri, then ducks a double clothesline from the Guns to finally tag in Lethal.
Lethal with a springboard dropkick into the Guns, then clotheslines for Bashir, reverses a whip off the ropes and Lethal with a tilt-a-whirl headscissor. Bashir sent off the ropes into an arm drag, Lethal floats over and delivers a dropkick to the face, cover and a kick out. Bashir reverses a whip off the ropes and Lethal tries for a handspring but the Guns pull his arms out from under him. Lethal and EY with baseball slides, then a pair of dives onto the Guns. EY's the only one back up while Lethal delivers an inverted suplex into a facebuster, makes the pin but Bashir kicks out. Lethal goes up top but Shelly cuts his legs out from under him, followed by a brainbuster. Now he goes up top but Creed on the apron gives Lethal time to recover, cutting Shelly off, tries for a superplex but knocks Lethal off. Creed with a springboard bulldog drives Shelly down into a waiting Lethal Combination. Creed with a clothesline to Bashir in the corner, then Lethal with a dropkick, then EY gets him in a gorilla press for Creed to springboard, driving Bashir to the mat face first. Lethal makes the cover but the Guns break it up.
Sabin launches himself off Shelly's back to dropkick Creed off the apron. EY tries for a German on Shelly but he fights out, then Sabin gets him with a cutter. Guns send Lethal into the corner, then Sabin into him for a forearm, then Shelly launches off his back for a forearm, then Bashir readies to do the same but Lethal launches off Sabin's back instead with a clothesline. Guns prepare for a double team on Lethal but EY turns Sabin inside out with a clothesline, then Lethal gets Shelly with a full nelson suplex. Float over DDT on Bashir by Creed, Lethal with the cover but Bashir kicks out.
Bashir lifted to the top rope by Lethal, but Shelly cuts him off, now Creed comes in, only to walk into a reverse STO into the middle turnbuckle, then Shelly delivers a knee to the back of the head. Creed now seated in the corner, with Lethal in the tree of woe in front of him as Bashir and Sabin on top above them, Shelly with a dropkick to the face and Sabin with a leaping one to the face of Lethal. EY walks into a scoop slam by Shelly, then Bashir delivers the frog splash. Guns with like an inverted slam/DDT combo on Lethal, Bashir makes the cover but Lethal kicks out. Bashir with the WMD-Driver (or a Deadeye for Hangman fans) into a pin but Creed breaks it up.
Creed gets Bashir with a pump kick, then Shelly tries to slingshot in but Creed catches him on his shoulders. Sabin pulls him off and gets Creed with a spin kick to the ribs, then Shelly with a kick to the face, then tandem kicks to the face. EY up in the corner, Sabin with a running boot while Shelly delivers a kick to the back of the head from the apron. Sabin gets him on his shoulders as Shelly goes up top, but EY shoves Sabin into it, crotching Shelly, then gets Sabin and Shelly up for a double death valley driver. Bashir tosses him out of the ring, then Lethal goes for a sunset flip from the apron but Bashir hangs onto the top rope. Then, for reasons no one can seem to understand, the ref kicks his hands off the ropes, Lethal completes the flip and gets the win in 13:59. What the hell just happened? I actually loved that match, but what the hell was with that finish?
EY is just as confused and disgusted with this as we go to replays and the Guns and Bashir leave pissed.
We go to commentary who hype up our main event, with the World Title and more on the line. We also have the first ever Knockout's Monster's Ball, Daniels and Suicide for the X Division Title, Beer Money and the British Invasion, Kong and Love for the Knockouts Title, Joe vs Nash, and an "I Quit" Match for the Legends Title.
We go to footage from earlier today where Sting is shaking hands of the younger talent with tonight being his last possible match, but up next, it's the Monster's Ball. We get a video package that starts off showing us the history and brutality of the Monster's Ball. This seems to be interwoven into the Abyss/Dr. Stevie storyline previously visited at Lockdown, and Stevie wants Abyss to transfer his aggression onto Daffney, to be in her corner. Daffney got pissed at Taylor because she blamed her for the Beautiful People cutting her hair, and in turn would challenge her to this match, I'm sure with the encouragement of Stevie.
First Ever Knockouts Monster's Ball Match: Taylor Wilde vs Daffney (w/ Abyss & Dr. Stevie)
Pre-Match Notes & Thoughts: This is just TNA's version of an Extreme Rules Match, no DQ, no countouts, which I believe was named after Abyss. Originally it had this gimmick where the competitors were sequestered in a dark room for 24 hours before the match or something like that, but I guess they eventually did away with that. They also had the touch of Penzer saying that "weapons were encouraged" during ring introductions, which were also done away with. Daffney comes out with kendo stick in hand, while we see a couple of trash cans filled with weapons by the ramp, along with a table set against the ring post.
Daffney swings and misses with the stick, then Taylor sends her off the ropes into a heel kick, then some elbows, cover and a two count. Taylor goes out and grabs one of the trash can, emptying it into the ring, with a hockey stick and road signs and a lid. Daffney picks one of the signs though as Taylor gets back on the apron, nailing her in the head with it. Daffney raking the back, then a scoop slam onto the trash can lid. Rakes the face with her boots, then Taylor face first in the corner, then Daffney chokes her with her boot while screaming "you love me." Taylor choked over the middle rope as Stevie encourages her. Daffney tries to whip her across the ring but she hangs onto the top rope, then boots her away, then throws Daffney face first into the trash can.
Taylor with a cookie sheet three times to the head, then puts the trash can over Daffney's head, followed by several shots with the hockey stick then a dropkick. Daffney kicks her away and rakes the eyes, goes for a suplex but Taylor fights out, then something like an AA into the corner and drops head first onto a trash can, cover an... Oh it's over in 3:37? That was... anti-climactic.
Stevie immediately comes in and gets in Taylor's face, Daffney clubs her from behind, then a fisherman's neckbreaker. Daffney gets the kendo stick ready to use but Stevie waves her off, then takes the crutch, but Stevie waves her off again. Then Stevie grabs a sac and empties the tacks onto the mat. Abyss climbs the apron in concern as Taylor tries to get free, but now Stevie wants Abyss to send her into the tacks. Stevie insists on him chokeslamming him into the tacks but Abyss hesitates, so Stevie slaps him twice. Stevie takes off his belt and Abyss picks up Taylor until Lauren runs down just as Abyss picks up Taylor for the chokeslam. Stevie shoves down Lauren and starts whipping Abyss, then he grabs Lauren again, but as Stevie threatens to whip Lauren, Abyss gets angry, then chokeslams Stevie into the tacks instead. Lauren checks on Taylor as Abyss' music hits and Stevie writhes on the mat, blood trickling through Stevie's white shirt.
Then we get a video package on Jarrett, who talks about creating TNA, his struggles, his sacrifices, accolades. Tonight, he puts his majority stake in TNA on the line after being goaded into it by Foley. Then, we go to the back where Borash informs us that on the next episode of Impact, we'll be seeing two former World Champions and the newest addition to the Knockouts division... but instead of telling everyone, people have to text a number to get the answer.
Then he turned his attention to Jarrett who's sitting nearby, who talks about Jarrett founding the company 7 years ago, and now he's got it all on the line. Jeff says as JB says there is no tomorrow, it comes down to tonight in the main event. He says he can't make a single mistake because if he does it could cost him everything he's worked for his entire life. He says when he realized that as long as Foley is the World Champion, that TNA, the company he founded, is going to continue to take steps backward. He says he can't afford it, JB can't afford it, no one can in that economy, in the world we live in, so tonight there's only one option, to make sure the belt is taken away from Foley. Then he walks off.
We get a video package for our next match. It starts with the Machine Guns and Lethal Consequences interrogating Daniels. They accuse him of being Suicide, having the same build, move the exact same way in the ring, and that every time Suicide shows up the crowd chant his name. Daniels would rebut by saying he has no time for video games (since Suicide came from the TNA video game), masks, or rappelling, but the Guns are convinced he's been Suicide since day one, finding a loop hole in his Feast or Fired firing to come back and steal the gold. Daniels would say that if they worried more about how to beat Suicide rather than who he is, they might not have gotten their butt kicked. The four would eventually corner and take hold of Suicide in the middle of the ring ready to take off the mask and Daniels would make the save. Don West is still convinced it's Daniels, but that's our lead up to this match.
Like they did at Lockdown, we get a bullet point run down of the important factors in this match.
- Mystery of Suicide: Since arriving, Suicide has been a man of mystery. Finally, the Guns and Lethal Consequences proven wrong that he is not Daniels.
- "You owe me one": When Daniels saved Suicide from being unmasked at their hands, he bartered a deal for an X Division Championship match.
- Can Daniels regain title?: Daniels is considered one of the X Division pioneers, with three past title reigns. His recent rehiring by Jarrett opens things up for his fourth stint as champion.
TNA X Division Championship: Daniels vs Suicide (c)
Pre-Match Notes & Thoughts: Based on what I was reading for my Lockdown write up, I have to assume the part of Suicide is being played by Kazarian tonight. Can't complain about getting two X Division matches in one night though. Suicide doesn't waste time rappelling down as he appears behind Daniels when the lights go out. Don West is still convinced that this is some scheme hatched up by Daniels to get the belt back.
Lock up to start and Daniels gets shoved into the corner. Daniels sent into the corner with some clotheslines, then a snap mare and a kick to the back, cover by Suicide and a kick out. Suicide with a suplex, float over into a pin and a kick out. Now some fast paced back and forth until Daniels get the side headlock, Suicide tries a back suplex but Daniels slips out of it, followed by a headlock take down. Suicide gets them into the corner but Daniels sends him off the ropes, Suicide catches him with a swinging neckbreaker and a dropkick, sending Daniels to the outside, followed by a somresault from the apron. Back in the ring, Suicide with rights, Daniels sent off the ropes into a hip toss, then a front flip leg drop into a cover and a kick out.
Daniels sent off the ropes, Suicide tries for another hip toss but Daniels turns it into an ab stretch. Suicide elbows his way free and delivers the hip toss, followed by knees to the back and more rights. Daniels reverses a whip off the ropes with a heel kick, then some heaadbutts, cover and a one count. Scoop slam in the corner, split-legged moonsault by Daniels into another cover and a kick out. Snapmare and a chinlock, Suicide fights out, off the ropes into a clothesline, cover and another kick out. Stomps in the corner, then yanks Suicide up by the legs, but he lands on his feet and starts delivering clotheslines. Daniels reverses a whip off the ropes, Suicide ducks a clothesline for a springboard back elbow. Clothesline, leg sweep and a leg drop into a cover for another kick out.
Suicide goes for Sliced Bread but Daniels shoves him chest first into the corner and follows with an enziguri. Clotheslines and a spin kick, Northern Lights with a bridge and a kick out. Chops by Daniels in the corner, then rights by Suicide, Daniels whipped across the ring, Suicide knee first into the corner into a Uranagi. Daniels goes for the Best Moonsault Ever, but Suicide rolls out of the way and he lands on his feet. Suicide sent off the ropes and catches Daniels for a tombstone position, then... well, Daniels tries to flip back and get Suicide in the position but they either fuck it up or Suicide blocks it, I don't know. Suicide rolls to the outside, Daniel goes for the springboard moonsault from the apron but Suicide gets the knees up midair.
Suicide and Daniels fight their way up the ramp, Suicide goes for a cutter but Daniels sends him backward onto the ramp. Daniels goes for a clothesline but Suicide catches him for a rolling senton onto the ramp. They manage to make it back in the ring by 10, Daniels gets a roll up out of a slingshot but Suicide kicks out at two, then Suicide with a crucifix for another two. Daniels sent off the ropes and they collide, sending Daniels to the outside. Now Sabin has made his way out and argues with the referee, and Shelly comes out to deliver a Codebreaker to Suicide. Daniels comes back in for the roll up and wins the title in 12:17. Oof, well... I feel like this could have been better, but this whole match felt off. Not to mention the entire match Don spent the whole time spouting off about the Suicide conspiracy which got annoying fast.
We go to replays and Daniels watches on, since his back was turned during Shelly's interference. He gets a mic and says as bad as he wants to be champion again he doesn't want it like that, and swears to Suicide he had nothing to do with the interference. He asks the referee to give them 5 more minutes to finish it properly, the ref asks if Suicide wants it and he just nods, so looks like this continues.
TNA X Division Championship (cont.): Daniels vs Suicide (c)
Quick back and forth until Daniels yanks him down to his back, kick to the head and a roll up for a two count. Suicide sends Daniels into the corner, followed by a Russian leg sweep off the rebound, cover and another kick out. Daniels reverses a whip into the corner, Suicide sidesteps, Suicide off the top into a roll up for another two, but Daniels quickly transitions into a Koji Clutch. Suicide manages to turn it into a pin but Daniels releases and kicks out, followed by a death valley driver, cover and a kick out by Suicide.
Suicide lifted to the top rope, tries for a straightjacket but Suicide slips out, leapfrogs over, dropkicks Daniels into the corner into a cover and a kick out. Suicide sent off the ropes into rapid strikes, then a backhand of his own, cover and a kick out. Suicide goes for the Suicide Solution but Daniels turns it into a hurricanrana into a pin attempt for another near fall. Suicide off the ropes into a Uranagi, then Daniels goes for the BME again but catches him and drives him down midair, another cover and a kick out. Suicide gets the Codebreaker in the corner, but goes for the cover too late and the time expires. So, I guess Suicide retains via draw in 17:17.
Now Daniels snatches the title away from the referee, then looks on in frustration before draping the title over Suicide's shoulder before raising his hand in victory.
We cut to Angle working out in the locker room, but up next, the Knockouts Title is on the line. Our video package starts out telling us that Love has awakened the beast, angry, vengeful, stalking her every move, hungry for her blood, destroyed her allies with her in mind, wanting to rip her limb from limb, and the title she took from Kong is no longer what she seeks. Now Kong just wants to see her smashed and mangled on the mat. Love has upset the balance of nature, and now must step in the ring with the untamed Kong, and will only survive on her ability, because there's nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, stay on her guard, fight like she's never fought before, now that she's incurred the wrath of Kong.
Commentary lead us through the bullet points as they did before.
- Awesome Makeover: The Beautiful People's transformation of the Knockouts Division culminated in the hair cutting of Awesome Kong.
- Mi Pi Stretchered: Awesome Kong proceeded to eliminate Madison Rayne, Velvet Sky, and Cute Kip (Billy Gun) in Stretcher Matches, leaving Angelina Love without backup.
- Wrath of Kong: Tonight at Sacrifice, it's the final step in Kong's plan of revenge, not only does she get her hands on Angelina, she also has that chance to once again become Knockout Champion, a title belt she has dominated since its inception.
TNA Knockouts Championship: Awesome Kong (w/ Raisha Saeed) vs Angelina Love (c)
Kong goes right after Love in the corner but gets herself in the ropes, forcing the ref to pull Kong away, but as Love gets distracted by "Kong's gonna kill you" chants, she gets pulled from the ropes by the hair and thrown across the ring. Kong with rapid strikes until she's pulled off, but Love rolls out of the way and out of the ring, running around the ring, only to loop around and run right into Kong. She tries to hop the guard rail but Kong doesn't let her get far, with a double chop to the side of Love's hands. She tries to hold onto the guard rail as Kong grabs her by the legs but it's no use. Love gets thrown into the rail, then face first into the ring apron, then the guard rail again, then swung by the legs into the rail. Love whipped back first into the rail, Kong with a chop across the chest, then goes for the spinning back fist but Love ducks and she connects with the ring post, then shoved face first into it three times. Love escapes into the ring hoping for a countout but Kong is up in no time.
Love with a side kick takes Kong down in the corner, now with rapid strikes of her own until the ref pulls her off. More rapid strikes until she's pulled off. Boot to the head, then again but it barely fazes Kong, now trying to beg her off. Kong grabs her by the throat but Love boots her and tries to escape up the ramp, but Raisha is right behind her, causing a distraction for Kong to run up with a standing splash, sending Love down to the ramp. Back into the ring, Kong with a leg drop, then she goes to the middle rope but misses a frog splash, Love rolling out of the ring. Love grabs a can of something from under the ring, but Raisha gets on the apron and grabs hold of it before Love can use it, then sidesteps as Kong charges, sending Raisha to the floor. Ref gets distracted looking out at her and Love sprays the bottle in Kong's face, rolls Kong up and retains in 6:06. Well... it was a match.
Kong is still blinded as Love lays on the mat trying to recover, the ref helps her back to her feet. Kong gets her vision back though and delivers hard rights, Love sent off the ropes into a standing splash. Implant Buster (double underhook facebuster) by Kong as officials try to wave Kong off, and Love tries to escape but Kong pulls her back for another Implant Buster. Kong's music hits and she looks on pleased before leaving with Raisha.
We now get a video package for Sting ahead of the main event. He voices over saying he's ruled the ring for two decades, and as a 12x World Champion, fame, fortune, and an enduring legacy follow him, he had it all. He says that three years ago he walked away, that there was nothing more that he had to gain, nothing left to prove, but he couldn't stay away. He sacrificed contentment for one more go around, it wasn't the glory, the fame, nor the echoes of the crowd that kept calling, it was the voice of his soul. He says that ring defines him, it's where he needs to be. Tonight he puts his career on the line in the main event.
We now cut to JB who's standing by with the man himself. JB goes over everyone's stakes in the match tonight before coming around to Sting. Sting says it's inevitable that fans will be watching him wrestle his last match sooner or later, but he doesn't plan on it being tonight, that he purposely put his career on the line to assure himself that he had no option other than to win this match tonight, because he's not finished yet. He says he made a promise to himself, to the business, that he was going to bring back the honor and the respect that he walked into 20-some years ago when he started. He calls out to Mick now, saying he retires on his own terms, and his only, and tonight his terms are he's going to continue on the way the Stinger always has, starting with Foley and the World Title. He says it's showtime before walking off.
Next we have a video package for Joe vs Nash. It starts with Joe voicing over, saying that at the beginning he was raw, untapped, and that they said he was the future of pro wrestling, and he lived up to the hype. He says he cut a swath of destruction through TNA that's never been seen since, but something went wrong, things began to change. Nash had cost Joe the World Title some months back as we see in footage. Joe wonders if it was politics, the great veterans holding him down, or was it something inside of him that made him stop, and fact is it was, it was fear of what he's capable of doing. He says anytime a man comes to this point in his life, he can sit down, be good, live a comfortable existence and a life of mediocrity, or he can take what he wants, shakes things up and do things the way they were meant to be done. He says he said to himself no more fear, wondering, or doubt.
Nash's turn to get a word in and he says this world runs on one thing, violence, that we thrive it, need it. He says they say there's a nation of violence running around TNA, and at Sacrifice there's going to be violence, that it's gonna ride into town, but it's name won't be Samoa Joe, it'll be Kevin Nash.
Kevin Nash vs Samoa Joe
Lock up to start and Nash shoves him into the corner, then a knee and rights as the ref pulls them apart. More knees in the corner to the midsection, then choking with the boot. Elbow to the back of the neck, more rights in the corner, Joe sent off the ropes into a big boot. Nash already goes for the jackknife but Joe rolls through instead with a heel hold, until Nash gets to the ropes. Joe now with boots to the leg and right hands. Running elbow in the corner and an overhead kick to the head sends Nash to the outside.
Nash face first into the guard rail, then a second time, followed by more rights until Nash thumbs the eye. Joe now face first into the rail then the ring post. Nash grabs a chair, swings and misses as Joe ducks, then Joe swings it into Nash's shoulder before throwing him into the steps. I guess this is No DQ. Joe backs the ref off as he tries to get Joe back in the ring, now Joe with more rights and Nash has been busted open from the steps. Back in the ring, Nash with another thumb to the eye, rights in the corner, Joe sent across the ring, ducks a clothesline and an enziguri, now the Coquina Clutch but Nash rams him back in the corner. Now Nash with elbows to the head and a right drops Joe, cover and a two count.
Joe sent into the corner and gets Nash with an elbow, then a boot, then a boot from the middle rope, cover and a near fall. Joe goes for the Coquina Clutch again while Nash is down on his knees, but Nash gets to the ropes before getting in a low blow. Sidewalk slam on Joe, cover and a kick out. Nash with more rights, Joe ducks and delivers some of his own, comes off the ropes with a knee, then a running senton, cover and a near fall. Joe with the Clutch once more while Nash is sat on the mat, Nash reaching for the ropes again, but now Joe gets in... I don't for the life of me know the real name of it, so will just call it the Tazzmission, Nash taps and Joe gets the win in 8:06. This was your typical Nash match, but the right man won, so it's something.
Joe isn't done though and continues with elbows to the neck as security rushes down to break it up, but Joe lays them all out. Joe with repeated shots to the open cut now and security rush back in. Joe finally leaves after spitting on Nash as security check on him, Joe heads to the back. Steiner runs down to check on Nash and scares off security as he helps Nash up.
Up next, we have the Team 3D Invitational Finals. We get our video package where we see Team 3D winning those titles last month at Lockdown. We get an interview with Don and Team 3D, where Bubba says as the 22x Tag Champs, they want to help breathe new life into the tag division and make it even greater. He announces the first-ever Team 3D Tag Team Invitational Tournament, with the winner getting a trophy, a check for $100,000 and a shot at the titles. We'd see Magnus and the British Invasion interrupt an in-ring promo, mocking them for wanting to give back like they're royalty and proceed to lay out Team 3D. Roode of Beer Money now chimes in and says if there's one thing Team 3D has taught them is that if they want a fight, have the balls to fight fair, saving 3D from the attack. This tournament also included Suicide and Amazing Red, the Guns, LAX, Eric Young and Jethro Holiday, No Limit, and Lethal Consequences, with Suicide/Red and Young/Holiday losing in the semi-finals to get to this point.
Then we cut backstage where Lauren is standing by with Team 3D, still dual tag champs, and she asks if the tournament turned out to be everything they envisioned. Devon says no doubt, then thanks TNA for showcasing the division, that they have the best tag division in the business. He says its only right that the best entered the tournament, that like the once said give back to the business by allowing it to take place. She turns her attention to Ray and asks him his assessment of the two teams, as well as who he thinks will win tonight. He starts with Beer Money, saying they know them inside and out, and is proud to say that next to Team 3D, they're one of the best teams on the planet today. He says they have a bright future ahead of them in tag team wrestling. Then he moves to the British Invasion, he says if they wanted their attention they've got it, taking their steel briefcases to the backs of 3D's heads, then left them laying in the middle of the ring the week prior to this. He says next time they see the Invasion, they're gonna drink their tea, eat their crumpets and punch them straight in the face. As far as a prediction for tonight, he hopes Beer Money kicks their royal, British asses.
We get the brackets for the tournament, showing us how we got to this point before Team 3D make their way out and join commentary for this match, where we see the trophy and big check nearby.
Team 3D Tag Team Invitational Tournament Finals: Beer Money Inc. (James Storm & Robert Roode) vs The British Invasion (Brutus Magnus & Doug Williams) (w/ Rob Terry)
Pre-Match Notes & Thoughts: Seems like both Doug and Brutus are holders of Feast or Fired briefcases.
Doug and Roode start things off with some quick back and forth, Roode forcing a break in the ropes as Doug gets the better of the exchange. Doug now working the arm some more until Roode gets to the rope again. Now Doug with some uppercuts, sent off the ropes with a spinning back elbow, only to be dropped with a clothesline. Doug sent into the corner with a clothesline, Roode with chops and a seated snap of the neck. Storm tags in, Doug sent off the ropes, Storm leapfrogs over and he runs into an atomic drop from Roode, then Storm with the Russian leg sweep, cover and a two count.
Doug charges Storm into the corner and Magnus tags in, Storm sent into the corner but delivers a series of clotheslines. Magnus reverses a whip off the ropes only to bewhipped back to the mat, then a swinging neckbreaker by Storm, cover and a two count. Magnus rest against the ropes and Storm charges, sent up and over but skins the cat, while Roode pours some beer into his mouth. Storm spits it into Magnus' face while Roode distracts the ref, misses a couple shots, then poked in the eyes by Storm, then use Doug as a battering ram of sorts. Double suplex on Magnus before leading a Beer Money chant.
Storm is sent off the ropes and Roode sends him up and over onto all three of the Brits before Roode brings Magnus back in. Storm gets sent into the corner but gets the boot up, goes to the second rope but the ref gets distracted by Roode, and Doug shoves Storm down to the floor. Doug now with uppercuts, then Storm face first into the steps before rolling Storm back in. Magnus now stomping and choking away before sending him face first in the corner and Doug tags in. Doug with a scoop slam, then a knee drop, cover and a kick out.
Rear chinlock by Doug but Storm fights back up and delivers a backstabber. Storm tries to crawl for the tag but Magnus knocks Roode off the apron before dragging him back to the Brits corner and tagging in. Uppercut and choking over the middle rope by Magnus, then tags in Doug again, Storm sent into the corner, then Magnus whipped toward him but Storm sidesteps, then Doug caught with a drop toe hold into Magnus for an inadvertent low blow. Roode's back on the apron and Storm leaps for the tag. Roode hands out clotheslines, Doug sent off the ropes for a back drop, neckbreaker on Magnus, spinebuster on Doug, cover but Magnus breaks it up. Roode reverses a whip into the corner and Storm kicks him in the head, only to be sent face first into the apron by Rob on the outside. Roode sends him into the rail with a baseball slide, then Doug lifts Roode to his shoulders into a european uppercut, hooks the legs but Roode kicks out.
Doug goes up top as Magnus lifts him up, but Roode gets him with the bell clap, then Storm comes in to cut off Doug on the top rope. Roode sends Magnus head into Doug for another low blow, then Magnus is tossed to the outside. Storm with a hurricanrana on Doug, Roode with a splash off the top rope, cover but Rob grabs the referee before the three, so he ejects Rob from ringside. Meanwhile the Invastion attack from behind, Storm sent into the corner for a running knee. Doug grabs one of their briefcases while Magnus distracts the ref, but Roode gets it and nails Doug in the head with it, makes the cover and Beer Money win in 10:52. Damn fine match here, very little to complain about. Team 3D were great on commentary too.
We get replays and Team 3D join Beer Money in the ring, shaking hands and raising their hands in victory. Tenay tells us the trophy presentation will happen on Impact.
Now we get a video package for Kurt ahead of the main event. He voices over and starts by saying this isn't a team sport, that it's all about the individual. He says he didn't become an Olympic gold medalist, a 12x World Champion by depending on the help of others, that motivation, dedication, determination, the will to never give up, to never quit, only come from within. He says he sacrificed his body and soul to get to the top, to stay at the top, to retain power, glory, control, it's who he is, it's what he does. Tonight, he puts his leadership of the Main Event Mafia on the line.
We cut backstage where JB is standing by with the man himself, who has the chance to become a 5x TNA World Champion, and JB asks if he can imagine a world where he isn't the leader of the Mafia. Kurt starts by saying it's not going to happen, that there's only one godfather of the Mafia being himself. He says he likes to control things, that he's in control of his own destiny, and he'll be in control of the match and of TNA. He says it's time for the Mafia to start dominating once again, and it starts with Angle winning the World Title for the 5th time. He and his security head out.
Up next, it's the "I Quit" Match. We have a video package that starts with TNA's voiceover guy, who says to become a legend you must never stop, countless hours, days, months, devoted to becoming the best, training and studying to make yourself stronger and smarter, fighting, clawing, working your way to the top, facing adversity, pushing yourself to the point of no return. But to be known as a legend, you must never give up, never quit. We have Booker T, a 6x World Champion and a staple in pro wrestling for nearly 20 years, and we have AJ Styles, the Phenomenal One, and TNA's only Grand Slam Champion. These two warriors are set to collide in a fight that will test who the real legend is. Like the gladiators of Rome, they will sacrifice their bodies and do battle until one man can no longer fight. The loser must give up for the victor to raise his arm as the TNA Legends Champion.
We get our bullet points from Tenay for this next match:
- Booker challenges for "his" championship: Last October in Las Vegas, Booker T unveiled the first-ever Legends Championship, a personal tribute to himself.
- AJ proves legendary status: For "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles defeating Booker, a personal goal, winning the Legends Title, his personal measuring stick and he accomplished both.
- I Quit rules: Tonight here at Sacrifice, it's not about pinning the opponent, it's not about making them submit, it's about punishing the opposition to the point of no return, to the point they say "I Quit."
"I Quit" Match for the TNA Legends Championship: Booker T vs AJ Styles (c)
AJ tries to take him down immediately until Booker gets to the ropes. Lock up and AJ gets shoved into the corner. AJ tries to take him down again but Booker just shoves him away. Booker now with with knees and chops and boots in the corner, misses a side kick and now AJ with rights and a snap mare, followed by a kick to the back. AJ with a rear chinlock until Booker shoves him back in the corner with more rights and kicks to the midsection, then a side kick. Suplex by Booker, blocked by AJ and delivers one of his own. AJ now with an Indian deathlock and AJ gets the ref to ask but Booker doesn't give in yet.
AJ now working the leg, stomping and dropping the elbow now twisting the knee around his elbow until Booker clubs the face with his forearm. Booker chops, AJ sent off the ropes, ducks a side kick, then starts to kick the leg before sending Booker face first into the corner. Rights by AJ and chops, knees to the chest drops Booker to the mat. AJ goes for a suplex but Booker blocks, then AJ slips out of an attempt by Booker and sends him into the corner. AJ with a knee to the ribs, Booker sent into the corner, then sent up and over to the apron, tries for a springboard but Booker cuts his legs out from under him before knocking him throat first onto the guard rail with a side kick. AJ dropped onto the guard rail chest and throat first, Booker asks if he's ready to quit but AJ won't yet.
Back in the ring, Booker with a brief wrist lock before ramming the knee into AJ's ribs, then several to the head. Booker chokes him on the mat and the ref asks him but AJ can't even speak. Booker delivers a scissors kick as AJ is draped over the top rope on the apron, then the ref asks again but he won't give up. AJ face first into the apron and AJ stumbles around ringside before being rolled back in. AJ with some shots to the ribs, off the ropes, ducks a clothesline but runs into a forearm, then Booker does a Spinaroonie. Booker now works a key lock as AJ screams into the mic, refusing to quit. AJ fights back to his feet though and delivers a Samoan drop, but Booker hangs on and AJ keeps screaming into the mic. AJ manages to turn it around and get free but no time to capitalize.
Booker with a shot to the face, then another, now AJ with some of his own, trading rights back and forth, then Booker misses a Harlem Side Kick and AJ gets the Pele Kick. AJ first to move and lays into some mounted right hands, AJ having the ref ask Booker every two or three shots. Back on their feet, AJ with more rights, off the ropes into a spinebuster. Booker now lays into AJ with mounted rights and has the ref ask AJ but he won't give up. Booker goes for another side kick but finds himself crotched on the top rope, then knocked to the floor by AJ, then a slingshot onto Booker. Ref asks Booker but he won't give up yet. Thumb to the eye by Booker, misses a clothesline and hits the ring post instead before AJ sends him face first into it, then back in the ring, Booker still won't give up.
Sharmell comes down to the ring asking him to not to give it up, while AJ gets on the apron with the Phenomenal Forearm, but Booker still won't give up. AJ goes for the Styles Clash but Sharmell climbs the apron and causes a distraction, allowing Booker to escape, goes to come off the ropes for a scissors kick somehow completely oblivious to Sharmell being right there and ends up knocking her down. AJ gets Booker in an armbar and Booker screams in pain but won't quit. Jenna (apparently Nash's girlfriend) comes down with a towel though and throws it in for Booker, and the ref calls for the bell, so AJ retains in 16:51. I questioned whether you could do this in an "I Quit" Match however as someone pointed out to me, there is a precedent to this, so I'll let it pass.
Jenna and Sharmell argue as AJ gets his hand raised and Booker looks on confused. Sharmell tends to Booker before we get to another video package.
This time, it's for Foley ahead of the main event, just like they did with the others. Foley says some call him a hardcore legend, a risk taker, a thrill seeker, that his battered body is a testament to that. He says sometimes you have to break bones, spill blood, take risks to seize dreams, that's the sacrifice he made to get noticed, to become champion, the sacrifice he makes each and every week to add to his legacy. He caps it off by saying history is written by the winners. Tonight, he puts the TNA World Heavyweight Championship on the line.
We cut to JB who's with the man himself in his office, at his desk holding his title. Foley says everyone's making a sacrifice, but one sacrifice being asked is much greater than the others. He says he'd love to be the man responsible for ending Sting's career, he'd like to be the leader of the Mafia, and he'd love to have Jarrett's majority stake, but the most important thing to him is that nobody walk away with what he has, the TNA World Title, and he doesn't even want to think of a world where he isn't champion, and will do whatever it takes, by whatever means necessary to ensure it does not happen. He says that after this match he will still be the TNA World Champion.
Now it's time for the main event, and we have our bullet points.
- Foley's first title defense: It was last month at Lockdown where Mick Foley shocked the wrestling world. Tonight, the TNA Executive Shareholder puts that championship on the line.
- Champ faces 3 challengers: Recently on Impact, Kurt Angle, Sting, finally Jeff Jarrett agreed to roll the dice, to take a gamble in exchange for a World Title shot.
- Who will make the ultimate sacrifice?: Tenay goes over the rules and how these stakes work, which I'll get into shortly.
Ultimate Sacrifice Match: Jeff Jarrett vs Kurt Angle vs Sting vs Mick Foley
RULES AND STAKES: I actually kind of like this concept for a match. As previously mentioned, they all are putting something on the line, but it doesn't mean that they will all lost something tonight. This match can end in one of four scenarios:
1) If Mick Foley is pinned or submitted, he loses the TNA World Heavyweight Championship to the person who beat him.
2) If Jeff Jarrett is pinned or submitted, then whoever beats him gets his majority stake in TNA.
3) If Kurt Angle is pinned or submitted, then whoever beats him becomes the new leader of the Main Event Mafia.
4) If Sting is pinned or submitted, he will be forced to retire.
Foley in storyline is the one who came up with the rules for this match, which makes him the smartest one of the four. In three of these 4 scenarios, he retains his championship no matter who gets pinned, giving him a 75% of walking out the champion, as opposed to usually having a 25% chance in a 4-way.
We get a brief stare down between the four before Jarrett goes after Kurt, and Sting after Foley. Right hands in opposite corners before Sting and Mick take it out of the ring, Kurt with an uppercut. Sting sends Mick into the guard rail as Jeff drops the leg over the back of Kurt as he's draped over the ropes, then goes again, but Kurt pops up, Jeff ducks a clothesline, Kurt goes for the Angle Slam but Jeff catches himself into a DDT, makes the cover but he kicks out. Jarrett clotheslines Kurt to the outside as Mick rolls Sting back in, Foley sent off the ropes into a boot and... well they fuck something up as Kurt is sent into the guard rail. Mick sent off the ropes, goes for the double arm DDT, but Sting trips him up to go for the Scorpion Deathlock but Foley rolls to the ropes for a break.
Foley and Sting go back outside as Kurt is rolled back in, only to knock Jarrett off the apron into the guard rail. Sting sends Mick into the guard rail, then over the rail and they fight into the crowd, while Jarrett's head is sent into the steps off camera, then onto the announce table. Back in the ring, Kurt with a snap suplex as Sting and Foley keep fighting in the crowd, Kurt with a cover and a two count. The back of Foley's head is sent into a concrete wall as Kurt comes off the ropes with a kick, but it's caught by Jeff, sweeps the leg and locks in the figure 4. Foley and Sting make their way back to the ring as Kurt tries to fight out of the hold, Mick delivers a piledriver to Sting on the ramp and Kurt gets Jeff in the ankle lock. Foley gets out Socko and gets Jeff with the mandible claw mid-ankle lock, but Kurt gets Mick, kicking him out of the ring. Jeff is sent off the ropes and into a belly to belly overhead, Kurt with the cover and a near fall, than again.
Kurt with a rear chinlock and Mick joins commentary to take a rest, with Sting laid out, Mick planning on jumping in for an easy win. Kurt off the ropes and Jeff delivers some clotheslines and a Pedigree, cover and a kick out. Kurt sent into the corner and gets Jeff with an elbow, goes up top but Jeff cuts him off. Sting is seen coming to as Jeff goes up top and delivers a superplex. Sting breaks up a pin attempt and delivers kicks and rights in the corner on Jeff. He and Kurt trades rights on Jeff back and forth before Jeff falls to the mat. Kurt with shoulders in the corner, then Sting with the Stinger Splash, then Kurt whips him to deliver a second. Sting goes to follow with a clothesline but Jeff ducks, then ducks one by Kurt who connects with Sting.
Kurt now with the German suplexes on Jeff and Sting gets in Kurt's face, shoving him. Kurt gets Sting with two German suplexes back to back, and with everyone out Kurt turns his attention to Mick. He's convinced Kurt won't touch him when he's between Tenay and Don as Kurt makes his way over. So Kurt gets around that by doing a front flip over the table onto Mick. Kurt brings Mick around and delivers an Angle Slam on the concrete floor as Jarrett sends Sting to the outside. Kurt rolls Mick back in and Kurt grabs a chair. Jarrett with the Stroke on Mick, cover but Kurt breaks it up.
Angle Slam on Jarrett, then Sting comes in, trips up Kurt and locks in the Scorpion Deahtlock. Jarrett rolls up Sting for a two count. Jarrett sent off the ropes by Sting, ducks a clothesline but collide with each other, Jarrett drops to the mat and Sting right after, his head delivering a low blow. Foley is back on his feet and gets two Sockos out, one for each arm and gets the claw on Sting and Jarrett, but they send him off the ropes, Foley ducks a double clothesline and reapplies the claws, bringing them down on their backs for a pin on Jarrett, since only his shoulders are down right now but Jarrett gets the shoulder up. Kurt is back up and gets Mick in the ankle lock and Mick is forced to release Sting and Jarrett, only to roll through and send Kurt into the ref.
Sting with the Scorpion Deathdrop on Kurt, cover but the ref is out. Jarrett gets his guitar and smashes it over Sting's head, cover but the ref is out. Mick gets the chair Kurt brought in and gets Jarrett in the head, and the ref comes to, Mick with the cover but Jarrett kicks out. Kurt up top with the frog splash on Foley but he kicks out. Sting sends Mick to the apron with a right hand before pulling him back in. Mick turns his attention to Kurt but he gets to him Kurt, then Jarrett goes for something, but Kurt back drops, Jarrett goes for a sunset flip but Kurt rolls through and get the ankle lock. Sting tries to stop it but Kurt gets him now for a double ankle lock, until Mick nails Kurt with a forearm.
Double arm DDT on Kurt, cover but Sting quickly rakes the eyes and pulls Mick off, kicking him out of the ring now. Jarrett gets the chair and sets it up in the middle of the ring. Sting with a suplex to Foley on the floor while Jeff puts Kurt on the top rope, delivering a Stroke onto the chair. Sting though slides in, covers Kurt, Jeff is too late and gets the win in 15:01. Sting is now the leader of the Main Event Mafia, and Foley keeps the World Title.
Jarrett looks on in shock and I think the ref tells him the title isn't his, as Foley lays out on the floor. He informs the result to Jeff then goes out to hand the title over to Foley, before raising Sting's hand in victory. Foley retreats up the ramp, crawling as we get a replay of the ending and Foley being handed the title back, Jeff looking on. Sting is seen talking to a laid out Kurt as Jeff takes his leave, followed by Sting.
To cap off the show, we get a brief hype package for the next PPV, Slammiversary, which will feature the King of the Mountain match. Oh god that will be interesting to cover.
OVERALL THOUGHTS
Well.... This was a downgrade from the last month. Not to say there was nothing good about it. The opening match was good aside from the dumb finish, the Invitational Finals was good. The "I Quit" Match was fine, and even the main event was decent. While I liked the concept of it though, I feel like it wasn't pulled off all that great, I mean here we had people trying to pin others that wouldn't benefit them, or going after the thing they wanted most, more specifically Sting who wanted his World Title back and instead pinned Kurt. Maybe he didn't want Jarrett to lead the Mafia, I don't know, because it wouldn't have cost him anything if Jarrett had gotten that pin. He could have rolled Mick in... Maybe I'm just overthinking it, suppose we'll see how this plays out, since I plan on covering Slammiversary next. Everything else on this show was rather lackluster, between the short Monster's Ball match, the typical Nash match, and the meh Knockout Title match. That said, with a runtime of 2:49:25, there was a total 1:44:06 of wrestling on this show.
