TNA Slammiversary VII (2009)
We start with a video package featuring classic footage from over the years in TNA, before we go to the arena, where they're live from The Palace of Auburn Hills in Auburn Hills, Michigan. Mike Tenay and Don West welcome us to the show, and we get to our first of four title matches of the night.
As like before, Tenay goes through the bullet points:
- Suicide vs the Numbers Game: The defending champion, the masked man of mystery Suicide, finds himself outnumbered in the title match 4-on-1.
- Four Challengers, Two Teams - Putting himself at an even more disadvantageous situation, the four challengers, the tag teams of Lethal Consequences and the hometown Motor City Machine Guns.
- King of the Mountain Rules: Once you beat an opponent, by pin or by submission, while they go to the penalty box for 2 min, you then become eligible to retrieve the title from the Keeper of the Belt, in this match Detroit Tiger Curtis Granderson, and then you hang it above the ring to win the match and the X Division Championship.
King of the Mountain Match for the TNA X Division Championship: Suicide (c) vs Consequences Creed vs "Black Machismo" Jay Lethal vs Alex Shelly (1/2 of IWGP Jr. Tag Team Champions) vs Chris Sabin (1/2 of IWGP Jr. Tag Team Champions)
Pre-Match Notes & Thoughts: Curtis joins commentary, and Suicide appears on top of a penalty box as the lights go out and back on.
We already have the ring divided between the challengers and the champion, the former huddling up and corner Suicide with some shots and stomps. More shots out of the corner, Suicide sent into the corner, clothesline by Creed, dropkick by Lethal, then a springboard bulldog from the apron by Creed. Suicide sent off the ropes into an inverted atomic drop, dropkick to the legs, then to the face by the Guns, while Lethal and Creed grab the ladders set up at ringside and slide them into the ring. Suicide starts to fight back against the Guns, comes off the ropes, ducks a clothesline by Shelly but walks into one by Sabin, then Shelly with a clothesline to the back of the neck, Sabin holds up Suicide, Shelly comes off the ropes, Suicide slips free and Sabin gets nailed with a clothesline. Suicide off the ropes now while Lethal and Creed hold up a ladder, springboard back elbows onto the Guns by Suicide. The ladder halfway wedged into the corner, while one side is held by Lethal, Creed tries to whip Suicide into it but Suicide slips under it, then slams it into all 4 challengers. Suicide with a back suplex onto the ladder on Lethal, cover and Suicide gets the pin.
Eligible: Suicide; Penalty Box: Lethal
Curtis leaves commentary now that Suicide is eligible, and Creed goes right after Suicide. Double arm wringer and suplex by the Guns on Suicide, then running leg drops by all three on Suicide. Guns lean the ladder against the ropes before Creed catapults Suicide into a waiting Shelly, who catches him while Sabin hits an enziguri, then Sabin with the STO into the ladder. Ladder set back up against the ropes and Suicide leans up against it, Creed charges and Suicide sends the ladder into his face. Suicide sent into the corner, sidesteps Shelly, then Sabin charges and sends a forearm inadvertently into Shelly. Russian leg sweep onto Sabin by Suicide, then a Codebreaker in the corner onto Shelly, cover by Suicide and Shelly is sent to the penalty box.
Eligible: Suicide; Penalty Box: Lethal, Shelly
Lethal still has another 30 seconds in the box, though nothing happens before he's let out. Lethal goes up top with an ax handle to the head, cover and a kick out. Suicide sent off the ropes with a clothesline, cover and a kick out. Suicide sent off the ropes again, flips over Lethal, then sends him face first into the middle turnbuckle. Meanwhile Sabin is back in with a chair and throws it into Suicide's face. Lethal in with a chair now too and sets it down, catches Suicide with the Lethal Combination, Sabin tries to steal the pin but Lethal breaks it up, then covers, while Sabin and Creed pile up on top and Suicide is pinned. There seems to be some confusion between the three, they think they're all eligible, but commentary point out since Lethal was the first on top, only he is eligible.
Eligible: Lethal, Suicide; Penalty: Suicide
Shelly is out of the box shortly after this, and the four challengers start celebrating in the ring for some reason, and Lethal gets the belt from Curtis, but the Guns now on the attack on Lethal and Creed. We get some whips and running back and forth between the teams in opposite corners and eventually the Guns hit clotheslines in the corners. Double footstomp/leg sweep combo on Creed. Lethal now fighting back, whips Shelly into the corner but Lethal gets hung up on the middle rope in the corner, followed by kicks to the back by the Guns. Kicks in the opposite corner to Creed, then a backbreaker by Sabin as Shelly goes up top for a knee drop, then rolls across the ring into a backstabber on Lethal. Suicide is out now as Sabin is sent to the outside, Creed with a TKO on Shelly, cover and now he's eligible.
Eligible: Lethal, Creed, Suicide; Penalty: Shelly
Suicide gets hit with a ladder by Lethal as he gets up on the apron, Creed and Lethal send him off the ropes into a backbreaker by Lethaal, into a Russian leg sweep by Creed. Running dropkick to the side of the head of Suicide as Lethal holds him up in a chinlock, Creed covers but Suicide kicks out. Sabin back in as Suicide sends Lethal and Creed face first into adjacent corners, Sabin tries to get him on his shoulders but gets send into a ladder with a monkey flip instead. Lethal sent up and over to the outside but lands on his feet, trips up Suicide, setting him up for Creed to dive over the ropes onto him. A chair's been set up on the floor and Suicide sends Lethal face first into it, then they fight into the aisle way, allowing Sabin to leap onto the penalty box and dive onto all three. Shelly sets the ladder up in the ring and starts to climb but he isn't eligible, so Sabin lays down for him, Shelly covers and becomes eligible now.
Eligible: Lethal, Creed, Suicide, Shelly; Penalty: Sabin
Shelly gets the title and starts the climb, but Suicide is back up on the apron and takes the ladder out with a springboard dropkick. Lethal and Creed back in now as Lethal sets the ladder up in the corner, sending Suicide into it face first. Lethal goes up top, as does Shelly and they trade shots. Lethal goes face first into the corner as Shelly drops to the apron, Creed with a running dropkick sends him into the guard rail, Suicide with a front suplex drops Creed onto the ladder and catapults Lethal across the ring. Sabin out now and clotheslines Suicide and himself over the ropes, but catches himself on the apron to deliver a springboard tornado DDT onto Lethal, covers and becomes eligible.
All eligible, Lethal to the penalty box
Creed with a pumphandle suplex on Sabin, then caught with a slam by Shelly. Suicide with a slingshot DDT on Shelly, then Sabin with another slam. Sabin now sets up the ladder and gets the belt, makes the climb but Suicide is back in to cut him off. Suicide face first into the corner before hanging him up in a tree of woe, then a running dropkick to the face. Sabin repositions the ladder and starts to climb, but Lethal's out of the box and takes him down with a side suplex off the ladder, then Shelly hits a frog splash on Lethal from the top rope. Superkick on Suicide by Shelly, who then slides out and bridges the ladder across the apron and guard rail, only to be caught with an enziguri by Creed as he slides back in the ring, sending him to the outside. Scoop slam on Suicide by Creed, Lethal goes up top, but Sabin crotches him. Sabin reverses a whip off the ropes but Creed catches himself, right in front of the bridged ladder, then sends Sabin up and over but he catches himself on the apron. Suicide dropkicks Creed which knocks him into Sabin and he lands on the ladder. Shelly up top with a missile dropkick on Suicide, sends him to the outside and Shelly follows up with a baseball slide, knocking Suicide into the chair previously set up and then a slingshot crossbody onto Suicide. Lethal goes up top as Sabin is laid out on the ladder and drops an elbow, both rolling off to the floor.
Shelly and Creed up on the apron, trading shots now, Suicide back up now and Creed is sent into the turnbuckle, then a superkick by Shelly, then Sliced Bread onto the apron. Now trading shots with Suicide, Shelly goes for Sliced Bread again using the penalty box this time but Suicide slips free, dropkicking Shelly into and over the guard rail. Suicide gets the belt and slides the ladder back in, sets it up and make the climb, but Lethal is back in, pushing the ladder over but Suicide catches himself on the top rope and climbs onto the penalty box. Lethal tries to hit him with the ladder but Suicide takes it and slams it down on his head instead. Lethal now doubled over in the corner with the ladder bridged across the box and his back, and Creed starts to climb the side of the box. Shelly slides into the ring with a second ladder as Suicide and Creed fight atop the box. Shelly starts the climb as Suicide walks across the bridged ladder and delivers something like a rolling cutter. Suicide grabs the belt, makes the climb and hangs the belt to retain in 23:38. Setting aside the overcomplicated rules of the match, it was given plenty of time and it was a fun watch.
Suicide celebrates briefly before the lights go out and Suicide disappears as they come back on.
Over to commentary now who puts over the match and Suicide, before they run down the card, including Daniels vs Shane Douglas in a 2nd Chance Match, not sure what that means. We have a mixed tag Monster's Ball match between Daffney and Raven against Abyss and Taylor Wilde. We have Sting vs Matt Morgan, with a spot in the Main Event Mafia on the line if Morgan wins. A Knockouts Title match between the champion Angelina Love and Tara (FKA Victoria). A tag title match between Beer Money and Team 3D, I assume the former getting the shot they earned against British Invasion at Sacrifice. In the main event, the second King of the Mountain Match for the World Title, with Foley defending against Styles, Jarrett, Samoa Joe and Angle. With that out of the way, they send it to the back.
Lauren is standing by, but before she interviews Douglas, she has an update on Team 3D, who were overseas defending their IWGP Tag Titles the night before, hopped on a 15-hour intercontinental flight to get to the show, and will keep us posted as soon as she hears anything. Douglas walks into shot, and explains the whole "2nd chance" thing, as this is his last chance to become a member of the TNA roster up next, and he says he's the benchmark in the business, that every place he's been he's set the standard, and he's been the man, as the old guy says, because he beat the man. He says he's been the guy that carried the gold, place to place, over seven years as champion. He reminds Daniels that to be the man, he's got to beat the man, and Douglas has done that his entire career, and hasn't come to Slammiversary to watch himself get beat tonight. He says Jarrett has done Daniels a favor, felt a little sorry for him, it's a weakness of Jarrett's character, but he feels sorry for no man and nobody. He says tonight there won't be a free pass, and Daniels will find out, like Lauren and the entire TNA will find out, the Franchise is a legend in the sport, he set the standard, and he knocks punks down trying to make names for themselves. He walks off.
We get a video package for this match, where Douglas felt disrespected that Jarrett gave Daniels a second chance. He says he walked out three years ago and wonders where his second chance is. He appeared on Impact to serve notice, demanding a second chance, and vowed to make life miserable on Daniels, TNA and all the idiots until he gets what he wants. He'd attack Daniels and AJ with Joe making the save. Daniels would make the challenge for Slammiversary, with Daniels' spot on the roster on the line.
2nd Chance Match: Daniels vs "The Franchise" Shane Douglas
Pre-Match Notes & Thoughts: Douglas is out first to a less than warm reaction and gets a mic, and if that's how a second-rate sports city like Detroit treats a legend from Pittsburgh... oh, and that's it.
We get a shove by Daniels then a lock up, but Douglas starts clubbing the back before Daniels can react, then chokes him over the middle rope. Daniels sent off the ropes, ducks a clothesline and dropkicks the knees of Douglas, before mounting for some rapid right hands into a side headlock. Douglas gets back to his feet, then trips up Daniels and steps on his back. Drop toe hold by Daniels, now stepping on Douglas' back, followed by rights. Douglas sent off the ropes into the corner and Daniels follows with a dropkick dropping Shane to the mat. Stomps in the corner by Daniels before applying another side headlock, back to their feet Daniels is sent off the ropes but hits a shoulder block, goes to come off the ropes and Douglas tries to roll under him but Daniels outsmarts him, dropping down for another side headlock instead. Douglas fights back up again, goes for a back suplex but Daniels slips free and hits a dropkick, then a spinning heel kick, cover and a near fall.
Douglas sent off the ropes, but catches himself on the opposite side and slips out of the ring. Daniels goes to dropkick through the top and middle rope but Shane moves out of the way, though Daniels catches hold of the top rope before he hits the floor, catching Douglas with a springboard moonsault as he turns around. Douglas face first into the apron repeatedly, then goes for another side headlock but gets shoved elbow first into the steps instead. Douglas now with a hammerlock working the arm, before shoving him into the steps a second time. Back in the ring, Douglas with an arm/chinlock combo, Daniels fights back to his feet with shots to the gut, off the ropes but caught with a clothesline. Douglas now a double underhook working the arm, into an armbar until Daniels gets to the ropes.
Douglas stomping away at the arm until Daniels kicks him away and nails an enziguri. Daniels now with clotheslines, then a Northern Lights with a bridge for a two count. Daniels calls for the BME but Douglas catches his foot and kicks him in the bad arm, taking him back down. Trading shots now, Douglas tries for a belly to belly but Daniels fights out of it and gets him with a back heel trip, followed by the BME for the win in 8:16. Eh, it was alright. Douglas did as best he could I suppose, but it was pretty evident why he doesn't have a spot on the roster. Daniels pretty much carried this one.
Daniels poses in the corner as we go to replays, then Daniels heads to the back as Douglas looks on in disbelief, before Tenay sends it to JB in the back.
Borash is with Foley ahead of tonight's main event, who says Foley has a 20% chance and doesn't like Foley's odds of retaining. Foley says he doesn't like JB's numbers, while admitting he himself was never much of a numbers man, needing summer school just to pass 10th grade geometry, but the way he sees it it's not 1-in-5, it's 2-in-5. Borash is confused, but Mick asks that after the bash he threw Jarrett if JB thinks he has it in his heart to turn on him, not to mention Jeff is the founder of TNA, wondering how it will look to the shareholders if the founder turns up as World Champion. He says Jeff knows what's good for him, for Foley, and for the future of the company, and for TNA to live up to its true potential he needs to stay champion for a long time. He starts singing "He's got the World Title in his hands" while JB finishes the last line for him, and Foley says that was awful, but says he's going to be completely focused on King of the Mountain, and when it's over it's time for him to concentrate 100% on his next title defense at Bound for Glory. JB points out that BFG isn't for another 4 months though, but Mick says he's messing up with the numbers now, saying it's 16 months, clarifying that he means BFG 2010. There's some kind of package on the table and JB says Mick ought to open it up tonight, seemingly a gift. Mick says he's going to open it in private before leaving with a moonwalk.
We get a video package for the Knockouts Title match up next. Fame and success have followed Angelina Love. Using cunning and athletic prowess, she emerged as the alpha female in TNA, and now basks in her own narcissistic radiance. Having achieved everything she said she would, she simply wanted more. That's where Tara comes in, as Angelina asked if there was anyone who could take her on, Tara would make her debut and accept the challenge, taking every opportunity to demonstrate why she should be the next champion, as we see her beating up the Beautiful People backstage. Tara has locked herself dead in the sights of the Beautiful People, has proven herself a worthy adversary, and now is her chance to prove she is a worthy champion.
Before we get to the match, Tenay runs down the bullet points for the match:
- Beautiful People fall into web: Since winning the Knockouts Championship back in April at Lockdown in Philadelphia, Angelina Love, targeted by both former champ Awesome Kong, and the newest Knockout Tara.
- Tara's immediate impact: Beautiful People have been reeling, totally on the defensive since Tara's arrival, her impact swift and impressive.
- Lucky in love: Angelina's title win came without defeating the ex-champ Kong, she's been quite fortunate to maintain the gold. Ms. Love looks to be at a vulnerable position against a hungry, against an experienced challenger tonight at Slammiversary.
TNA Knockouts Championship: Tara vs Angelina Love (c) (w/ Velvet Sky & Madison Rayne)
Stare down to start this match before Love shoves Tara, then a lock up into a headlock and shoulder block from Love. They go to lock up again but Love slips behind for a waist lock before taking Tara down, then starts slapping the back of her head. Tara now with right hands then a hangman by the hair, and another. Love whipped across the ring by the hair, Tara covers for a one count and Love rolls out to Rayne and Sky. Tara with a dropkick through the ropes sends Love into the guard rail, then as the ref checks on Love as she's rolled back in, Sky and Rayne yank Tara's legs out from under her and sends her face first into the apron. Tara's tossed back in, Love rolls her up for a two count.
Snapmare by Love, then a dropkick to the face, cover and another kick out by Tara. Mounted rights by Love, then slamming Tara's head into the mat repeatedly. Tara with shots to the midsection but she's cut down by Love, sent off the ropes and catches Love with a sunset flip for a two count. Love off the ropes with a knee lift and a spin kick, cover and a near fall, then another pin attempt for a two count. Tara gets tossed out to get attacked by Sky and Rayne as Love distracts the ref, Tara whipped back first into the steps before being tossed back in, Love covers for another two, then another attempt and another two. Love throws a tantrum.
Love with boots to the ribs, then Tara with some shots of her own, Love sent off the ropes into a clothesline, then another and a scoop slam. Tara with a spinning sidewalk slam, then slides out of the ring for some shots on Velvet, then Madison. Back in the ring, walks into a bicycle kick, then Velvet sprays Tara in the face with something, then Love hits the Botox Injection to retain in 6:55. It was an alright match.
Beautiful People celebrate over Tara's prone body, and Tenay sends it to Lauren in the back.
She's standing by with Dr. Stevie and Daffney in some dark part of the arena, she says that tonight the therapy session ends and suggests that maybe Stevie will go back to the padded cell where he belongs. Stevie asks if that's any way to talk to him, a professional, and she scoffs at the idea, as he wonders if this is what TNA is paying her for. He thinks she has some very deep-seeded issues, and maybe the two of them are gonna have to eventually put them to rest, after they got done with her boyfriend Abyss. He says he tried, that he's not the bad guy here, he tried to help [Abyss], spent hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds of hours trying to put together the jigsaw puzzle that was Chris Parks, but then he discovered that the puzzle will never, ever be put back together. He says the saddest part is that Lauren's sorority sister Taylor has to be dragged in to this Monster's Ball. Lauren says she never asked to be involved, but Stevie says not to worry, that for TNA's 7th anniversary, he'll have a 2-for-1 therapy special.
Raven, who had appeared behind her a little bit ago says he really likes Lauren, because she wears her moral superiority like a cloak of human excrement. He says no matter how much she tries to smile and show a joyous side, she reeks of sadness and that turns him on. He turns his attention to Abyss now, and says they're brothers in blood, bringers of chaos, and in a multiverse of infinite possibilities they're both statistical anomalies, addicts. He asks Lauren if she can smell the blood in the air tonight, the misery, the torture, the pain, the anguish. He says tonight will be a glorious night of redemption as he turns back to Abyss, saying they've had hours and hours, days and days, years and years of therapy and nothing's changed and nothing ever will change because the two of them are hopeless, hopeless addicts on a downward spiral that has nowhere to go, except straight to Hell. He says though the there's one possibility, a slim chance at redemption, because the two of them are gonna have that breakthrough even if it kills them. Quote the Raven, nevermore. Raven laughs maniacally as Lauren escapes. That was pretty fantastic.
We go to our next video package with that oh so familiar voice over. Raven, he has returned to his nest in TNA as he seeks to take out his pent-up aggression, in a match that he made famous. "The Monster" Abyss, this is not the first time that he has gone to hardcore hell with his longtime nemesis. They have a colorful history of violence and carnage, trading blood, sweat and scars, in a dance of brutality that seems as much about destroying the will as it does destroying the body. Raven, the aggressor, forcing the hand of others to do his bidding, pushing the monster to the edge, waiting for him to snap.
In Daffney, Raven has found another eager pupil ready to sacrifice herself for his sick pleasure. Standing with Abyss is Taylor Wilde, a woman warrior, willing to stand up to put an end to the violence. Tonight, another chapter in the sadistic saga that is the Monster's Ball will be written, as Raven and "The Monster" Abyss challenge each other in pain.
As like before, Tenay goes through the bullet points:

Mixed Tag Monster's Ball Match: Raven & Daffney (w/ Dr. Stevie) vs Abyss & Taylor Wilde
Wasting little time going at it in the ring, Raven and Daffney get whipped into each other and Abyss with a clothesline on Raven. Daffney back up in the corner, Raven gets whipped into her, Taylor gets launched up and over Abyss for a forearm on Raven, then Abyss goes to follow with a splash but Raven sidesteps, so he squashes Daffney instead. Stevie tosses a trash can in to Raven as Abyss looks down at Daffney, Taylor goes on the attack as Abyss punches through the trash can, knocking Raven out to the floor. Taylor with a fireman's carry, goes to come off the ropes but Stevie trips her up. Stevie checks on Raven as Abyss press slams Daffney onto both of them on the outside. Taylor goes up top now and takes them all out with a crossbody.
Taylor with boots to the ribs of Daffney and clubs to the back as Raven and Abyss fight in the crowd. Abyss back first into the guard rail and now Daffney fights back. Daffney jumps onto Abyss' back with a sleeper, but Taylor comes from behind and sandwiches her head between a trash can lid and cookie sheet, knocking her back over the rail to the floor. Raven with the lid to Abyss' head repeatedly deeper into the crowd and now Taylor and Daffney join them, Raven whipped into a guard rail, then Abyss thrown into it. Raven rams the rail into Abyss' side before choking him with it, then goes beside the stage and drags a table out in front of it. Abyss sent into the rail again, but Abyss starts to fight back, Raven sent into the rail no as they fight by the table. Taylor with more kicks to Daffney, into the rail now herself before setting Daffney up on the table. Taylor climbs up a set of speakers and dives off, sending Daffney through the table with a splash.
Raven and Abyss make their way back to the ring as Daffney and Taylor recover. Raven grabs a kendo stick but gets clubbed from behind and sent back into the ring. Abyss grabs a bag from under the ring, but Stevie comes in with a chair to the head of Abyss before he can empty it on the mat. Abyss now busted open as Raven sets up the chair in the middle of the ring, Abyss sent off the ropes and sent into the chair with a drop toe hold. Stevie tosses some weapons into the ring for Raven as Daffney has crawled back to the ring, a kendo stick to the head of Abyss, and again, and again, splitting the stick in two. Raven with the cover for two.
Abyss choked with another kendo stick over the middle rope, but Taylor clocks Raven over the head with a trash can lid for the save. Daffney with a nasty shot to the head with a cookie sheet as Raven hits Abyss with a trash can lid over the head, then again and again and again, but it barely fazes him, so he comes off the ropes into a big boot from Abyss, sending the can back into his face. Abyss now with the can to the head of Raven, then the kendo stick to the back of the head. Abyss grabs a fresh can and drops it down, delivers the chokeslam but inadvertently kicks the can out of the way as he goes for it. Abyss makes the cover but he's Stevie's distracting the ref. Raven with the can to the back now, then Stevie holds up Abyss only to be nailed with the trash can this time. Taylor goes up top, launched off by Abyss for a splash on Raven. Abyss covers again but Stevie grabs the ref again.
Abyss grabs the bag again, emptying the tacks onto the mat. Daffney comes behind and tries to attack but she's not doing much damage. She's got her back to the tacks now, turns back and forth until she runs into Taylor, who slams Daffney down into the tacks. Tayor with the cover but Stevie breaks it up. Now Abyss is standing right behind him, but Raven comes from behind and nails Abyss with a chair to the back, followed by the Evenflow DDT onto the chair, cover but Abyss kicks out. Raven goes for the DDT into the tacks, but Abyss counters with the Black Hole Slam into them instead, covers and gets the win in 14:12. Another great match.
Abyss helps Taylor back up as they celebrate and we go to replays. Abyss carries Taylor to the back, as Tenay sends it to JB in the back.
He's standing by, ahead of tonight's main event, with "The King of the Mountain" Jeff Jarrett, the match named in his honor and has never lost any that he's competed in. JB brings up how Jarrett has stated he has no desire to be champion, but has also said tonight is the night he takes his company back, and how it seems to be a bit of a contradiction. Jeff disagrees though, reiterates that he has no desire to be champion, that he has enough responsibilities on his plate, but at the same time if he doesn't get the title back, if he doesn't get control of the company there's no telling what brick wall they're all headed into. Borash asks to clarify if he's talking about Foley, and Jarrett says that damn right he is, calling Foley a walking, talking time bomb and is sick of him, and until the title comes back to him, he's not going to sleep much at night. Borash brings up how he talked to Mick earlier and tells Jeff that he's counting on his help tonight, that they're on the same page especially after what happened Thursday with the party he threw. Jarrett asks if he's trying to get him to think like Foley, or if Jarrett is supposed to know what he's thinking, if he looks like a psychiatrist. He says he's sick of Foley's head games, then turns his attention to Mick, saying after he wins the title then he'll decide what to do with it.
Onto our next video package for Morgan vs Sting. Morgan is making his case to join the Mafia, calling himself the DNA of TNA, how he's seven-feet tall, 330 lbs without an ounce of fat on him, how his name will be remembered in wrestling annals for years to come and the biggest American Gladiator in the history of the show. He graduated college first in his class while playing two sports to boot. A voiceover from Tenay says he sent his DNA to the International Space Station for... reasons, he calls himself the blueprint and the future of the business, and the future is now. Sting though says Matt has no respect, and tells him to come back when he finds it. Morgan calls himself the embodiment of respect, he respects everybody he encounters. He tried to endear himself to Angle one week by helping him beat Sting, but all it did was piss him off. Sting would agree to give Matt his position in the Mafia, if Matt can beat him at Slammiversary.
Matt Morgan vs "The Icon" Sting
If Morgan wins, he joins the Main Event Mafia.
Lock up to start and Sting is shoved to the outside almost immediately by Morgan. Morgan climbs out and Sting goes face first into the guard rail, then ribs first, then swung by the legs into it. Back in the ring, Morgan steps through the ropes and Sting yanks the middle one up between his legs, now Sting with right hands hangs Morgan up on the top rope, before being kicked off the apron into the announce desk. Morgan face first into the rail, Sting with kicks to the back of the leg before going back in the ring.
Morgan reverses a whip off the ropes, and Sting goes for a shoulder block, then a clothesline but Morgan won't go down, a third attempt by Sting sends him into a discus clothesline by Morgan. Tenay updates us that Team 3D have arrived as Sting get elbows to the side of the head in the corner as Morgan removes his elbow pads. Scoop slam on Sting, Morgan off the ropes with a leg drop, cover and a two count.
Sting whipped into the corner hard, then gets in Sting's face until the ref forces a break. Sting whipped across the ring and Morgan hits a splash, followed by a sidewalk slam, cover and a kick out by Sting. Sting choked over the top rope, then Morgan drops a leg over the back of his neck, going over the ropes to the floor in the process. Sting choked over the bottom rope as Morgan climbs the apron, then a leg drop to the back of the neck, another cover and a two count. Morgan with a rear chinlock, Sting fights to his feet and delivers elbows to the ribs, tries to run but Morgan pulls his hair and sends him down to the mat, another pin attempt and a two count.
Morgan choking again against the mat, then another chinlock, Sting fights back up again and elbows free, Morgan tries the hair yank again but Sting catches him with some rights now, trading shots back and forth, Sting with kicks to the back of the leg. Sting gets knocked to the corner and Morgan misses a splash, Sting up top with a missile dropkick. Stinger Splash to the back, then goes again but runs into a Carbon Footprint, Morgan covers but Sting kicks out. Morgan calls for the Hellevator but... well I think Sting was supposed to slip behind but they both just end up tumbling to the mat. Morgan covers or a two count.
Sting hits a low blow in full view of the ref, but it's not a DQ, then hits the Scorpion Deathdrop with some difficulty due to Morgan's size, covers but Morgan powers out. Sting with an enziguri on a kneeling Morgan, then goes for the Scorpion Deathlock but Morgan shoves him off into the corner. Morgan misses a corner clothesline, Sting goes to the middle rope to properly deliver the Deathdrop for the win in 9:03.
Sting poses in victory briefly before it goes to the back.
Lauren is standing by with Joe and Styles ahead of the main event, and she thinks they might have the advantage tonight by working together, with Jarrett and Foley not on the same page and Angle flying solo. Styles agrees and says this match is about strategy, having a plan and sticking to it. He says he's been talking about this match for weeks, that he and Joe have been talking, about what it takes to win. He doesn't care if it's Joe or himself, they're gonna put the company back in the hands of the guys who put them there in the first place, the originals. He turns his attention to Foley, Kurt and Jeff, saying they're taking back what's rightfully theirs.
Joe now turns to Angle and says the wait is over, and it's Angle's day of reckoning. He says he told him he was bringing the Nation of Violence to TNA and that's exactly what he did, and one by one the Mafia fell. First Kevin, then Steiner and Booker, and tonight this ends where it began with Kurt. He tells Kurt he's hunting and tonight, they will become the most powerful force in the history of pro wrestling. He and AJ walk off.
We have one more match to go though, and we go to the video package, which starts by reminding us Beer Money winning the Team 3D Invitational last month at Sacrifice, as well as Beer Money thanking them for the opportunity and sharing beers. Team 3D would watch their backs the next week with British Invasion making their presence known, however the week following Beer Money wouldn't return the favor, Ray having thought there was enough mutual respect between the two. Roode however would point out they don't owe anyone anything, especially not Team 3D, who are set to prove again they're the best tag team in the world.
Before we get to that match though, Tenay gives us the bullet points:
- 3D's Orient Express: Team 3D's travel and wrestling itinerary saw them compete in a IWGP Tag Title match last night in Osaka, and then a 20-hour journey for tonight's match in Detroit.
- Beer Money's Tournament Payoff: As winners of the Team 3D Invitational Tournament, Beer Money Inc. earned the trophies, the six-figure check and most importantly tonight's title match.
- Mutual Disrespect: The mutual respect between Brother Ray, Brother Devon, James Storm and Robert Roode, let's just say that was short-lived, they couldn't co-exist this past Thursday on Impact as a 4-man team, and now they go to battle for the TNA World Tag Team Titles.
TNA World Tag Team Championship: Beer Money Inc. vs Team 3D (c) (IWGP Tag Team Champions)
Devon and Storm start this out, and fans are already wanting tables. Quick back and forth to start with Storm getting a headscissor take down, only to turn around into a clothesline. Scoop slam by Devon, off the ropes with a diving headbutt, cover and a two count. Roode tags in, Devon sent off the ropes into an atomic drop/Russian leg sweep combo, then a knee drop off the ropes by Roode, cover and a two count. Roode shoved into 3D's corner and Ray gets the tag but Roode slips free before they can double team.
Lock up with Roode and Ray until Roode is shoved into the corner, then a kick to Ray as the ref pulls them apart. Trading shots, until Roode comes off the ropes into a side kick, then tries for a clothesline but Ray shrugs it off and shoves Roode away. A second try, then goes off the ropes a third time, ducks a clothesline and takes Ray off his feet. Lock up again, Roode into the corner once more and now Ray with shots and chops. Roode fights back with some shots but Ray slips behind with a release German. Roode fights back again with chops, Ray reverses a whip off the ropes, Roode goes for a sunset flip but Ray stands his ground and delivers some rights.
Devon tags in, Roode sent off the ropes into a sidewalk slam/leg drop double team, Devon covers for a near fall. Roode with knee and a club to the back and Storm tags in. Beer Money go for the double team suplex but Ray comes in from behind to push Devon back forward, Devon following up with a double clothesline. Storm sends Devon into the corner but he gets a boot up, only for Roode to trip him up and crotch him into the ring post. Storm with mounted rights before sending Devon off the ropes into a clothesline. Roode tags in again and chokes Devon on the mat before applying a rear chinlock. Devon gets back to his feet and elbows free, off the ropes into a back elbow, Roode covers for a two count. Devon tosses Storm out of the ring, Roode sent off the ropes into a double clothesline. Team 3D lay in wait for Roode but Storm gets Ray with an enziguri from behind, then Devon gets Roode with a flapjack before tossing Storm to the outside. Scoop slam by Bubba on Storm, Devon up top with the Wazzup. Ray tells Devon to get the table and he pulls one out from under the ring, setting it up at ringside, but Storm gets him from behind. Storm goes for a powerbomb but Ray gets him by the hair from over the ropes, then Roode comes from behind, then delivers a spinebuster. Roode with the cover but Ray kicks out. Storm tags in, double team suplex on Ray.
British Invasion make their way out now and we have a USA chant started, Magnus and Williams joining commentary. Face buster and reverse bulldog by Storm on Ray, cover and a two count. Devon goes for a scoop slam on Roode but he slips behind, as Storm gets a mouthful of beer, Devon shoved toward him but he ducks, and Roode gets a face full of beer instead. Rob Terry climbs onto the apron just as Roode is hit with the 3D, Devon covers but the ref is distracted. Ray knocks him off and Magnus checks on Rob, and Ray goes up top with a double clothesline to take them both down on the floor. Williams leaves commentary now, but he gets knocked off the apron and goes through the table set up earlier in the match. Devon turns around into a superkick by Storm, then the DWI by Beer Money (sitout powerbomb/neckbreaker combo), Roode covers and Beer Money win the titles in 16:59.
They celebrate with their titles as the Invasion make their way to the back, Ray looking on in disbelief and we go to replays. Tenay sends it to the back as Beer Money leave.
JB is with Angle now ahead of the main event, who points out the Mafia locker room is rather empty and Joe fulfilled everything he said he was going to do, taking out Booker, Nash, Steiner, leaving Kurt all alone, wondering if tonight is the night Joe fulfills his destiny. Kurt says he survived the wrath of Joe and is still there tonight and there to talk about it. He says it's not about Kevin, or Booker or Steiner, it's about him and Joe and his Nation of Violence, apologizing to Mick, Jeff and AJ for that fact. He says he becomes the next TNA World Champion, and he will celebrate, and the Mafia will resume their position on the throne in TNA. He tells Joe that at the end of the night they will be celebrating.
We get a hype package with that familiar voice over for the main event. The King of the Mountain Match, a battle unlike any other. Five men will test their limits like never before, to capture professional wrestling's most coveted prize. The rules to this battle make it one of the most feared in professional wrestling today. Some of the greatest warriors in history have entered this twisted playground, and only the most elite have left with the gold. Some of the greatest moments in the six-sided ring have taken place during this match. From the "King of the Mountain" himself Jeff Jarrett, achieving the impossible and claiming two victories, to the Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle, winning his first ever TNA World Heavyweight Championship, and Samoa Joe, becoming the first man to ever successfully defend the title.
The rules to this match are unlike any other. These men will battle it out in a Falls Count Anywhere warzone. Once a combatant has scored a pinfall or submission, he then become eligible to climb to his destiny, where he must hang the title high above the ring to claim victory, while the man who has been pinned or submitted must spend two of the longest minutes imaginable, trapped in a penalty box. But the climb to the top is not an easy one. Each rung in the ladder represents another opportunity for an opponent to attack, another obstacle that must be overcome. These men will test their will like never before. Some will test fate from great heights, others will come within inches of greatness, but only one will be crowned the King of the Mountain.
Of course, we have the bullet points from Tenay before the match:
- "Another" Title Defense for Foley: Since capturing the TNA World Heavyweight Championship back in April at Lockdown, Mick Foley so outspoken about defending it every month and against multiple opponents, like the four that he has tonight.
- Will power struggle be resolved?: TNA founder Jeff Jarrett takes the blame for bringing Foley to the company, and at the same time Jarrett looks to regain that World Title and the power that goes with it in his namesake match.
- King of the Mountain Rules: You already know the rules to this by now.
As everyone makes their way to the ring, we get separate video packages for each competitor.
He is a TNA original, one of only two current superstars who competed in TNA's first ever event seven years ago. A high-flyer, a risk taker, his in-ring prowess can only be described as phenomenal. He is TNA's only Grand Slam Champion, and looks for his fourth TNA World Championship. He is the incomparable AJ Styles.
On June 8, 2008, he became the only champion ever to retain his title in the King of the Mountain Match. A one-man Nation of Violence, on a mission to destroy. He also seeks to reclaim the power, and begin a new title reign. He is the Samoan Submission Machine, Samoa Joe.
A 12x World Champion, Double J won the first ever King of the Mountain Match. He has never lost this unique match, and looks to keep his unbeaten streak alive. He is the self-proclaimed King of the Mountain, and seeks to recapture World Gold for the first time in three years. He is Jeff Jarrett.
He is an Olympic gold medalist, a 12x World Champion, and arguably the greatest professional wrestler of all time. On June 17, 2007, he won his first ever TNA World Heavyweight Championship in the King of the Mountain Match. Will he be able to capture the World Title for a 13th time tonight, in a league of his own? He is Kurt Angle.
He is a man of many personas and unpredictable tendencies, but there is no doubt that this hardcore legend is one of the greatest World Champions of all time. Tonight, he seeks to retain his title in his first ever King of the Mountain Match. He is the reigning TNA Heavyweight Champion of the World, Mick Foley.
King of the Mountain Match for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship: Mick Foley (c) vs AJ Styles (TNA Legends Champion) vs Jeff Jarrett vs Samoa Joe vs Kurt Angle
Pre-Match Notes & Thoughts: So Kurt comes out wearing a Crosby jersey for some cheap heat, then as JB is doing the introduction for Foley, Joe has slipped on a Red Wings jersey and jumps Kurt before the match even starts, with refs trying to pry them apart. As a result of this, Joe has to start the match in the penalty box and Kurt is automatically eligible to win the match.
Foley climbed up a ladder at ringside as Jarrett and AJ start delivering shots on Angle, send him off the ropes into a dropkick by AJ, then a leg drop over the middle rope by Jarrett. Enziguri by Jarrett, separate covers by both him and AJ and Angle kicks out of both, then another by AJ and another kick out. Double team suplex on Angle, cover by AJ and a kick out. Angle sent off the ropes into a double elbow. Foley enters the ring and tries to scoop Jarrett, but ends up falling on his back and Jarrett falls on top and... I don't know what the hell just happened, there were several counts by the referees but no kick out seemingly by Foley. Already off to a bad start here. Joe's out of the box, AJ gets hung up on the top rope by Angle and drops to ringside. Oh I guess Foley did get pinned? What the hell is going on with this match?
Eligible: Angle, Jarrett; Penalty box: Foley
Joe with shots and clotheslines on Jarrett and Angle, then Angle tossed to the outside. Jarrett whipped into the corner for an elbow and an overhead kick. OVERALL THOUGHTS
Well I have to say this was better than Sacrifice. I actually enjoyed the King of the Mountain Matches for the most part, the Monster's Ball was fun to watch, had a good tag title match. Only real downsides were the Morgan and Douglas matches. That said, with a runtime of 2:54:19, this show had a total 1:41:13 of wrestling.
